Toyota Celica and MR2 Return: Iconic Sports Cars Reimagined

Toyota Celica and MR2 return

Toyota Celica and MR2 return as Toyota reportedly revives its beloved ‘90s sports cars. With the Supra’s future uncertain, these models could fill the performance gap in Toyota’s lineup.

AWD Turbocharged Rally Icon: The Celica?

Yuki Nakajima, executive vice president of Toyota, has confirmed that the Celica is under development, according to the Japanese magazine Best Car. Toyota plans to revive the Celica and MR2 with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, likely based on the new G20E powertrain.

If Toyota follows its rally roots, the Celica could return as a modern All-Trac, equipped with all-wheel drive and rally-inspired performance. This would align with Toyota’s history of dominating the World Rally Championship (WRC).

MR2: A Comeback in the Mid-Engine?

Toyota’s presentation of the GR Yaris M concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon has sparked speculation about a secretly developing new MR2. Toyota may be creating a lightweight, very efficient two-seater, based on the concept’s AWD setup and mid-engine layout.

Naohiko Saito, the chief engineer at Gazoo Racing, told Auto Express that the proposal includes AWD, though specific details remain unclear. This suggests an exciting midship sports vehicle that may use the same four-cylinder turbocharged engine.

Why Toyota’s Performance Future Looks Bright

Toyota has primarily focused on SUVs and hybrids. But the return of performance-oriented sports cars signals that the brand still values driving excitement. With the Supra on pause, a Celica AWD coupe and MR2 mid-engine roadster could bring back the spirit of Japanese performance legends.

For now, Toyota hasn’t officially confirmed the MR2, but the clues are adding up. Could a new MR2 and Celica be Toyota’s next big reveal? Stay tuned.
