Militants Open Fire in Popular Tourist Spot, Modi Calls It a “Terror Attack”
Pahalgam attack 2025: On April 22, terrorists opened fire on Indian tourists in Pahalgam, marking one of Kashmir’s deadliest civilian attacks in years. Local authorities and media sources said that at least 24 people were murdered and several more were injured.
The gunmen ambushed the tourists in Baisaran Valley, a remote but scenic hiking destination often called “mini Switzerland.” The area is accessible only by foot or horseback, and it was packed with visitors trying to escape the summer heat.
Modi and Global Leaders React
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the assault a “terror attack” and promised that those responsible would be “brought to justice.” He cut short his trip to Saudi Arabia following the incident. Vice President JD Vance, currently visiting India, expressed solidarity with the Indian people. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims,” he posted on social media.
The incident was also denounced by President Trump, who said that “the United States stands strong with India against terrorism.”
Eyewitness Accounts Describe Chaos and Carnage
Survivors described scenes of terror and confusion. “They just opened fire from behind the bushes,” said Binu Bhai, who was shot in both arms and legs. He recalled seeing at least a dozen bodies before he was rescued. The injured were evacuated on horseback and by all-terrain vehicles.
Security Under Scrutiny
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti called for an immediate investigation into security lapses. India’s Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Srinagar to conduct a high-level review of the situation.
Violence in Kashmir Has a Long History
India and Pakistan, who both claim the area, have long been at odds over Kashmir. Over the years, many have been killed in militant attacks. However, once the Indian government revoked Kashmir’s special status in 2019, there has been a notable drop in violence.
Tourism to the region has surged since then, with 22 million visitors recorded in 2023 alone. Pahalgam, in particular, has been a key destination.
Ahead, Uncertainty
The incident has not been attributed to any group. Security has been increased throughout the region, and investigations are still underway.
The safety of visitors and the future of Kashmir’s precarious calm are being questioned as the country grieves.
