Ecuador’s Most Wanted Man, “Fito,” Captured After Massive Manhunt

Fito captured: On June 25, 2025, Ecuador’s military recaptured José Adolfo “Fito” Macías, the infamous Los Choneros gang leader, during a raid in Manta. President Daniel Noboa announced the arrest in a speech to the country, hailing it as a major victory against domestic terrorism and organized crime.

Fito’s Escape Caused Pandemonium in Ecuador

Fito escaped from Guayaquil Regional Prison in January 2024, evading an impending transfer to a maximum-security institution, while serving a 34-year sentence for homicide and drug trafficking.

His escape plunged Ecuador into turmoil:

  • Nationwide riots and killings
  • Noboa declared an internal armed conflict
  • 22 gangs labeled as terrorist organizations

The United States also sanctioned Macías and Los Choneros in February 2024.

Footage from inside Fito’s prison suite shocked the nation. He lived lavishly:

  • Queen-size bed
  • Flat-screen TV and internet
  • Private bathroom and refrigerator
  • Hosted female guests and parties
  • Fireworks for his birthday

Security expert Jean Paul Pinto told CNN that “criminal groups controlled the prisons,” explaining Fito’s privileges.

 U.S. Extradition in Motion

President Noboa announced that Ecuador is now seeking Fito’s extradition to the United States, where he may face further prosecution related to international narcotics trafficking. The U.S. response is pending.

 Who is Fito?

  • Age: 44
  • Known for: Drug trafficking, murder, money laundering
  • Role: Founder and leader of Los Choneros, one of the most violent gangs in Latin America
  • First jailed: 2011, escaped 2013, recaptured months later

Fito was the last known living founding member of Los Choneros and had cemented his power even behind bars.

What This Means for Ecuador

Fito’s recapture may help the government:

  • Regain control of prisons plagued by gang rule
  • Restore public confidence in law enforcement
  • Show strength in Noboa’s ongoing war against organized crime

But security experts warn: dismantling the structure left behind by Fito will take years.
