Addressing a Surge in Drone Sightings
TRENTON, N.J. – Amid a significant increase in drone activity, New Jersey has implemented cutting-edge detection technology to monitor its skies. Governor Phil Murphy announced Monday that federal drone detection equipment is now operational throughout the state, following growing concerns from residents.
Governor Murphy’s Response to Drone Questions
Governor Murphy emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that the public is eager for answers. “I can’t step outside without someone asking, ‘What’s happening with the drones?’” he shared. Despite the advanced equipment in place, officials have yet to uncover any solid evidence of suspicious drone activity.
“This serves as a wake-up call for the U.S. to strengthen homeland defense against potential drone threats,” Murphy added.
Drone Sightings and Public Concerns
Reports of drones near military installations and airports have raised eyebrows, but officials maintain there is no current threat to public safety. Watchung Mayor Ronald Jubin expressed frustration over the lack of information, saying, “The drones appear nearly every night. Without clear answers, conspiracy theories arise—whether it’s collusion or incompetence.”
Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump suggested that federal authorities may be withholding information, fueling speculation among the public.
Misidentified Drones and Public Misconceptions
Federal and local officials revealed that many reported drone sightings turn out to be manned aircraft, hobby drones, or other aerial objects. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has over 1 million legally registered drones in the U.S., with activity ranging from commercial use to law enforcement operations.
White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby clarified, “Every case examined so far has been lawful activity, with no evidence of a public safety risk.”
Warning Against Dangerous Reactions
The FBI and New Jersey State Police are cautioning the public against using lasers or firearms to target drones or aircraft. The FBI’s Newark office reminded residents to consult public resources, such as flight path trackers, to verify aerial sightings.
“Incorrectly targeting manned aircraft or drones can lead to serious consequences,” the FBI emphasized.
NYPD’s Drone Monitoring Efforts
The NYPD reported detecting hundreds of drone flights weekly, with a surge in public reports due to heightened media attention. “We’ve seen a sharp increase in reports, but not in actual drone detections,” explained Rebecca Weiner, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism.
To address the issue, the NYPD and other local authorities are urging Congress to grant states more power to track and neutralize unauthorized drones.
Calls for Congressional Action
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has advocated for federal legislation to empower states with the authority to detect and manage drone activity. However, this proposed bill remains stalled in Congress.
The FBI has received approximately 5,000 tips regarding drone activity nationwide, but only a small fraction—fewer than 100 cases—warranted further investigation.
