During the busy holiday season, parking at Denver International Airport (DIA) can be a stressful challenge for many travelers. With high traffic and limited spaces, airport officials are advising travelers to plan ahead.
Michael Konopasek, a spokesperson for DIA, explained, “During peak travel times like the holidays, adjustments are often made to the parking availability to better accommodate travelers.” He encourages passengers to check the airport’s website for real-time updates on which parking facilities are open or closed.
Parking and Security Concerns
For some, the idea of leaving their vehicles at the airport might raise concerns, especially given past reports of motor vehicle thefts. In 2023, from January to November, the airport had 716 reports of stolen vehicles. However, Konopasek assured travelers that the situation has improved over the past year.
Improvement in Safety
From January to November of 2024, the airport recorded 273 vehicle theft reports—a 62% decrease compared to the previous year. This decline is attributed to enhanced security measures and stronger efforts by law enforcement. Denver’s District Attorney, Beth McCann, recently announced indictments against an auto theft ring that operated in part at the airport.
McCann emphasized, “Those who steal cars in Denver will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Tips for Travelers
Despite the improvements, airport officials stress that travelers should remain vigilant. Konopasek reminded passengers, “It’s important to stay aware of your surroundings and take the same safety precautions as you would in any other area.”
Additionally, the airport offers a 24-hour battery jump service for travelers who return to their vehicles with a dead battery.
