Shocking Paragliding Incident in China
Chinese paraglider viral flight took a shocking twist as Peng Yujiang soared to 28,000 feet during a routine test gone wrong. The accidental high-altitude flight, which took place on May 24 in the Qilian Mountains, quickly went viral after a video was posted on social media.
Gust of Wind Sends Pilot Skyward
Yujiang was testing new paragliding gear when a powerful gust of wind launched him unexpectedly into the sky. China Central Television (CCTV) reports he tried to deploy a parachute but got pulled into a cloud system, losing and regaining consciousness multiple times.
Despite the terrifying ordeal, Yujiang managed to land safely, though shaken from the extreme altitude and lack of oxygen.
Viral Video Prompts Investigation
Another pilot, Gu Zhimin, caught the high-altitude flight on video and uploaded it to social media without Yujiang’s permission. The clip quickly racked up views and prompted the Gansu Provincial Aviation Sports Association to investigate.
CCTV confirmed that officials have banned both Yujiang and Zhimin from flying for six months.
Danger of High-Altitude Flight
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), altitudes above 10,000 feet can cause hypoxia, a dangerous lack of oxygen that can lead to confusion, unconsciousness, or even death. Yujiang’s 28,000-foot accidental ascent placed him well within this danger zone.
