2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale Introduces Affordable Nonhybrid Model

Alfa Romeo has reintroduced a nonhybrid version of the 2025 Tonale SUV to the U.S. market, starting at $38,530. This move complements the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option, which starts at $48,030, offering buyers a choice between two powertrains at different price points.

Reintroducing Gas-Only Power

When the Alfa Romeo Tonale debuted, it was initially planned to include both nonhybrid and plug-in hybrid options. However, Alfa opted against offering the gas-only version in the U.S. for the 2024 model year. Now, for 2025, the nonhybrid Tonale makes its return, providing a budget-friendly option for subcompact luxury SUV buyers.

The new gas-only model features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. On the other hand, the PHEV model combines a rear-mounted electric motor with a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine, generating 285 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, offering a 0-60 mph time of 5.5 seconds and an EPA-estimated 33 miles of electric-only range.

Streamlined Trims and Pricing

Alfa Romeo has simplified its lineup across its models, including the Tonale, Giulia sedan, and Stelvio SUV. Each is now available in one or two trims, along with a limited Tributo Italiano edition. The nonhybrid Tonale starts at $38,530, while the PHEV begins at $48,030—$2,590 higher than last year. For those seeking exclusivity, the Tributo Italiano edition of the Tonale is priced at $57,185.

Key Features and Options

The 2025 Tonale comes well-equipped across all variants, including:

  • Interior Highlights: A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless charging pad.
  • Convenience Features: Adaptive cruise control, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat are standard.

    • Veloce Package ($1,000): Adds adaptive dampers, red Brembo brake calipers, and paddle shifters.
    • Active Assist Package ($2,000): Includes a 360-degree camera system and semi-autonomous driving mode.
    • Premium Package ($2,000): Offers ventilated front seats, perforated leather upholstery, and a power liftgate.

The PHEV Tonale is EPA-rated for 29 mpg combined, while the nonhybrid version is rated at 24 mpg combined, offering buyers different efficiency options depending on their priorities.

Why This Matters

Alfa Romeo’s decision to reintroduce the gas-only Tonale aims to attract a broader audience. With a starting price $10,000 less than the PHEV, the nonhybrid model could help the brand compete more effectively in the crowded subcompact luxury SUV market.

Additionally, the Tonale shares its underpinnings with the Dodge Hornet, creating indirect competition within the Stellantis group. However, Alfa Romeo is banking on its premium branding and Italian design to carve out a unique space.

Whether buyers prioritize the affordability of the gas-only model or the efficiency of the PHEV, the 2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale provides a compelling option in the luxury SUV segment
